Paint and Nectar by Ashley Clark

“I can’t decide whether I should stay up late to finish or leave some for tomorrow so I can stay in the story. She has such a different and beautiful style of writing that you just don’t want to end.”

These were the exact words I said to my husband the night I finished Paint and Nectar by Ashley Clark. I don’t stay up past my bedtime very often because I cannot function the next day. And with 3 little ones, I need to function. Am I right?

I feel like there are no words to do justice to Paint and Nectar. To say that it was a “great” book doesn’t feel like enough. Ashley Clark has a style of writing that is beautiful, graceful, and captivating. It’s amazing when you can feel the author’s passion for a city and story and the emotion of how much time they spent on their art.

The split time stories between each couple were woven together well. The mystery of the silver, the romance, the intrigue- kept me guessing all the way to the end. I enjoyed the ties to her first novel, The Dress Shop on King Street, and the subtle nods to the next book. The author’s descriptions had me longing to visit Charleston in real life and take in the culture, history, and art.

Plus-bluebirds are pretty important to me and my husband. Our real-life romance started at a place called Camp Bluebird. So, when bluebirds had a special place in this story, it made me smile remembering those sweet days.

Have there been special moments in stories that remind you of real life?

About the book:
In 1929, a spark forms between Eliza, a talented watercolorist, and William, a charming young man with a secret that could ruin her career. Their families forbid their romance because of a long-standing feud over missing heirloom silver. Still, Eliza and William's passion grows despite the barriers, causing William to deeply regret the secret he's keeping . . . but setting things right will come at a cost.

In present-day Charleston, a mysterious benefactor gifts Lucy Legare an old house, along with all the secrets it holds--including enigmatic letters about an antique silver heirloom. Declan Pinckney, whom Lucy's been avoiding since their disastrous first date, is set on buying her house for his family's development company. As Lucy uncovers secrets about the house, its garden, and the silver, she becomes more determined than ever to preserve the historic Charleston property, not only for history's sake but also for her own.
